To design a decorative product directly linked to tradition, designer Marco Zito took inspiration from tassels – objects with a timeless craftsmanship; precious, opulent, almost baroque.
When describing this process, Marco talks about how they started with the hyper-decorative form of a tassel which then needed to be broken down, reinterpreted and synthesised to eliminate every hint of a classical legacy and obtain elements with a contemporary design. From the conceptual stage, this series was always envisaged as being modular and configurational. What has resulted is 10 different elements differing in shape and decorative detail. The turned metal structure is enhanced with details in brushed brass and the traditional fabric fringes of the tassel are replaced by tiny gilded or painted metal rods.
As the project developed they designed an extra large version of the tassel resulting in 3 models which could be used to light large areas and fill voids. As well as studying shapes and sizes, they also wanted to play with luminosity, by using a polycarbonate disc diffuser they have been able to create a three-dimensional light effect whereby the tassels rods appear to float as they disappear into the web of light above. This gorgeous collection of lights is available in 4 distinct colour offerings; all matt white, mixed blue/greys, all black and mixed warm burgundy/greys. Designed by Armando Bruno and Alberto Torres, the Papilio series takes inspiration from the lightness of butterfly flight and the upward flutter of its wings.
A mix of simple design elements and materials culminate in a striking and bold vision. A game of light and shadow is created with the perforated elements that allow for glimpses of light at varying angles. While Papilio has a slightly retro quality, it is most certainly a re-interpreted contemporary chandelier. There are playful and trendy colour options but with the addition of a matt white finish, Papilio is even more adaptable to design schemes and large spaces. Designer Giovanni Battista Gianola has always been fascinated by our ability to perceive things around us through more than one sense at a time, like sight and hearing; light and sound.
He describes how when we talk about design we immediately think only of the form of an object, even if the function is the most important aspect of it all – take for example musical instruments. Instrumental sound is dependent on the design and materials they are made from. Thus, the Sound collection was inspired and born; rounded curves and familial shapes formed from brass that grow outwards, producing an energy that surrounds and inspires. An extensive collection of pendants and wall lamps that deserve to be listened to as well as marvelled at. Masiero 2020 Showcase introduces us to a new matt black + brass option, available to order now. See the Sound pendant here or send us an enquiry.
